Know the Signs of Inflammation

Inflammation is a huge topic of interest in this day and age. But what is inflammation?

Inflammation is the body’s response to foreign materials such as an invading microbe, plant pollen, or chemical. The body’s immune system then gets activated and triggers an inflammatory response to protect itself against harm.

There are two types of inflammation. Acute and chronic.

Normally, inflammation is obvious. When you scrape your arm, your skin swells up, becomes red and hot. When you get a papercut, it is painful, and it starts to become red and inflamed. These symptoms of pain, swelling, redness, and heat occur because your immune system responds by producing lots of white blood cells to protect the damaged area. This is known as acute inflammation and will subside with time.

On the other hand, inflammation can be chronic. This occurs when there are unwanted/foreign substances in the body such as from smoking, and being overweight where you have excess fat cells particularly in the abdomen. The build-up of fat and cholesterol in artery walls results in inflammation that leads to atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries from the build-up of plaque) leading to heart diseases and stroke.

Another common chronic inflammatory condition is arthritis. Arthritis is a leading cause of disability and chronic pain in the world, with a large number of people (especially elderly) suffering from some form of arthritis. Symptoms of arthritis include swelling, redness, pain, stiffness and loss of joint function etc..

While the condition cannot be cured, the varying degrees of discomfort and pain can be managed and eased to improve one’s quality of life.
